Koreas prepare for summit as North asks USA to ease sanctions

John Bolton Says North Korea Hasn't Done Much To Rid Itself Of Nuclear Weapons

Haley said Pompeo had delivered "solid" USA demands to North Korea and that Washington would not weaken those or ease sanctions on Pyongyang.

In an April summit, President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed to seek such declaration this year through three-way meetings involving the two Koreas and the United States or four-way talks involving the two Koreas, the U.S. and China. Those followed contentious remarks last week by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho on the sidelines of a regional summit in Singapore. Among the agreements was holding another inter-Korean summit in the fall in Pyongyang.

Pyongyang's state media has highlighted it has made goodwill gestures, such as a moratorium on nuclear and missile tests, the dismantling of a nuclear site, and the return of the remains of US soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War.

Relations between North Korea and the U.S. remain tense, despite reassurance from the U.S. State Department that the two countries are in contact with each other.

"We're going to continue to apply maximum pressure to North Korea until they denuclearize, just as we are to Iran".

"The U.S. should, even at this belated time, respond to our honest efforts in a corresponding manner", North Korea added in its statement.

The newspaper emphasized that North Korea has long made calls for declaring an end to the war and pushed to replace the armistice with a peace treaty, all of which it believes can be realized when the two sides cooperate. "However, the US responded to our expectation by inciting global sanctions and pressure against the DPRK", the statement read, using an acronym for North Korea's official name.

"As long as the U.S. denies even the basic decorum for its dialogue partner and clings to the outdated acting script which the previous administrations have all tried and failed, one can not expect any progress in the implementation of the DPRK-U.S. joint statement including the denuclearization", the statement read.

"This is all in North Korea's court", Haley told reporters traveling with her during a visit to Colombia, where she attended the inauguration of new Colombian President Ivan Duque and met migrants who had fled Venezuela.

Washington has said that sanctions will not be lifted until Pyongyang fully and finally dismantles its nuclear weapons.
