The news comes shortly after major USA airline JetBlue Airways Corp. hiked its fees for checked bags.
Up until 2014, many airlines followed a baggage policy that allowed travelers to check their first bag for free. JetBlue told Forbes that part of that service is that it still offers the most legroom in coach, free snacks, live television, and more.
Today, Southwest Airlines is the lone US carrier that has free checked baggage for all passengers. The price for checking a second bag is jumping from $35 to $40, and that third bag will now cost you $150-previously, it cost $100.
George Hobica, founder of the travel site airfarewatchdog.com, also predicted that others will match JetBlue's increase and expressed surprise that airlines had not raised bag fees before now.
"As a matter of good business, we routinely review and adjust our ancillary pricing to ensure a healthy business so we can continue offering the best customer experience of any USA airline", a JetBlue spokesperson said in a statement to Business Insider.
The price increase affects travellers on domestic and global flights. Southwest Airlines is increasing the cost of its EarlyBird boarding price from a flat $15 to $15, $20 or $25 looking on the route.United Airlines plans to begin charging for definite economic system seat assignments, a discover already in build at Delta and American. Oversized and overweight baggage fees have also gone up from $100 per bag to $150. Members with Mosaic elite status in JetBlue's TrueBlue frequent flyer program will continue to get two free checked bags on flights.
Some airline experts say it's only a matter of time before other airlines match JetBlue's baggage fee hike.
Today, JetBlue has made a decision to continue the practice, as they are now the first major USA airline to cross the $30 for a baggage check threshold.
