Greek teenager Tsitsipas upsets Djokovic to reach Rogers Cup quarter-finals

Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic has been sent packing from the Rogers Cup by Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas in a stunning 6-3 6-7 (5) 6-3 win on Thursday.

The big-serving sixth-ranked South African hit 15 aces and won 86 per cent of first serves in en route to the 7-5 6-3 victory.

A win for Djokovic would set up a potential quarter-final clash with German second seed Alexander Zverev, who advanced to the third round after a 6-4 6-4 win over Bradley Klahn.

The ninth-seeded Serb, competing in his first tournament since his Wimbledon triumph last month, won a dominant 83 percent of his first service points and wrapped up the day's opening match minutes before the first of several rain delays. "But I just played not that great, especially from the baseline".

The Greek teenager, who will be celebrating his 20th birthday this Sunday humbled four-time champion Djokovic 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 to book his place into the quarterfinals.

"I kind of fooled him when I was on the court", Tsitsipas said.

Also, Karen Khachanov of Russian Federation beat 12th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain 6-4, 7-6 (3), and Ilya Ivashka of Belarus topped American Ryan Harrison 7-6 (5), 6-4.

The second set was a battle as the Swiss, a three-time Grand Slam champion, fought back from an early break down, took a 2-1 lead, with the pair again trading breaks in the fifth and tenth games. I tried few a things that I didn't try before and I played a bit better. This is a far cry from 2017 where Tsitsipas did not even own a tour-level match win. "I would say I played OK". "I just played not that great".

Kevin Anderson and Grigor Dimitrov are also through to the last eight. Italy's Fabio Fognini, the No. 14 seed coming off a victory at Los Cabos, fell out with a 6-3, 7-5 (14) loss to Canada's Denis Shapovalov.

Toronto's Daniel Nestor - the oldest player at the tournament at 45 - and Vancouver's Vasek Pospisil were scheduled to play their first-round doubles match in the late afternoon.
