This is a huge scandal considering Gerard Depardieu is one of the most well-known actors in France and is also highly-acclaimed internationally.
The unidentified female says that the 69-year-old French actor sexually assaulted and raped her this past month at his home in Paris, France.
The actor "absolutely denies any attack, any rape", his lawyer Herve Termime said. The two met when Depardieu led a master class at her school, BFM TV reported. "The case was passed on to the Paris prosecutor", the source said.
The young woman was studying at a school where Depardieu is teaching, according to BFM.
In the meantime, Depardieu and his legal team have released a statement denying the accusations against him.
The actor, he said, was "shaken" by the allegations, which went against "everything he is and respects".
"Rape is a crime, but trying to seduce someone, even persistently or cack-handedly, is not - nor is being gentlemanly a macho attack", the letter reads. Jeremy Piven, Dustin Hoffman, and Morgan Freeman have also found themselves at the centre of misconduct claims in Hollywood's #MeToo anti-harassment era, while Kevin Spacey and Italian actress Asia Argento are now under investigation amid accusations of sexual assault and inappropriate behaviour.
Depardieu stars in Netflix's French series "Marseille". His other films include The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), 1900 (1976), The Last Metro (1980), Danton (1983) and 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992).
