England vs. India, second Test: Tourists facing defeat at Lord's

India's Cheteshwar Pujara left and head coach Ravi Shastri talk during a nets session at Edgbaston a day ahead of the 1st test cricket match between England and India

England´s batsman Chris Woakes (R) celebrates scoring his century on the third day of the second Test between England and India at Lord´s, London, on August 11, 2018.

When Woakes came to the crease England were, if not in trouble - India's capitulation on Friday for 107 meant that was already off the table - at the least undergoing the latest performance from a top order that refuses to be anything other than shaky. After the departure of the openers, English captain, Joe Root, stitched a min-partnership of 45 runs with debutant Ollie Pope.

On a rain-curtailed second day, it was a Cheteshwar Pujara run-out that cost the visitors dearly, as James Anderson's five-wicket haul helped the hosts bowl India out for 107.

Warwickshire favourite Woakes, recalled after England omitted Ben Stokes because of a clash with his fellow pace-bowling all-rounder´s trial for affray, had missed the hosts´ 31-run win in the first Test at his Edgbaston home ground last week because of fitness concerns following knee and calf injuries.

Joe Root (19) had battled through a hard spell when he first came to the crease and was set to be rewarded with more favourable conditions in the afternoon, only to be undone by Shami with a ball that nipped back and stayed low in the final over of the morning.

Captain Kohli hasn't played the same XI in successive Tests for 36 matches, dating back to the 2014 Adelaide Test in which he led India in whites for the first time in his career.

That easy wicket for England left India at 3/15. "I don't think it's just the Indian batsmen who would have struggled".

Sam Curran and Stuart Broad chipped in with a wicket each, while Anderson dismissed Ajinkya Rahane (18) and scoreless duo Kuldeep Yadav and Ishant Sharma to end with figures of 5-20. "For me I find it so much fun when it is like that", said Anderson. He was fortunate to enter the fray with the ball no longer swinging as it had throughout the match and India's bowling attack - undoubtedly rueing the decision to pick two spinners - either tiring or ineffective.

Batsman Pujara was brought in for Shikhar Dhawan.

Pujara and Kohli were involved in a run out which led to Pujara's wicket and turned the match in England's favour.
