Djokovic stunned by Greek teen Tsitsipas in Toronto third round

Novak Djokovic

The German beat the Greek in the only previous meeting at last week's Citi Open, but Tsitsipas is very confident as he is coming from the upset over Novak Djokovic.

However, Tsitsipas did well to break Djokovic for a 2-0 lead in the third set and never looked back. "Now I'll try to get ready for the next tournament".

"I was serving well so that break was everything", Tsitsipas said.

If he goes on to beat Daniil Medvedev, he could become the youngest player to win two matches at the Rogers Cup since Mats Wilander in 1982.

Shapovalov downed France's Jeremy Chardy in straight sets in the first round Tuesday night in front of a packed and supportive crowd at centre court that included Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid.

Toronto fans were treated to a scintillating match of tennis as world number one Rafael Nadal advanced to the Rogers Cup quarter-finals, while Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic was a shock casualty.

"I actually feel like there is more time now than before because the shot clock starts counting down once the chair umpire calls the score", Djokovic said.

He is joined in the third round by the likes of Russia's Karen Khachanov, who following a rain delay completed a 6-4, 7-6 victory over last year's US Open semi-finalist Pablo Carreño Busta of Spain. "I've known him, I've practised with him, but I've never played an official match so definitely not easy to find a rhythm from the beginning of the match", said Djokovic. "I took a few weeks off after Wimbledon so I knew I had to come here, play a lot of matches, and also to get used to the hard courts again". "Losing in this kind of tournament, it's not something I don't care about".

Elsewhere, Maria Sharapova made quick work of Bulgarian qualifier Sesil Karatantcheva, easily winning 6-1, 6-2 in a renewal of their former teenage rivalry.

He capitalised on his first match point with a cross-court forehand victor, sealing the biggest win of his career. They beat French duo Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

Meanwhile, third seed Juan Martin del Potro was forced to withdraw prior to his opening match due to a left wrist injury.

Canada's Daniel Nestor, the oldest player at the tournament at 45, was scheduled to play a first-round doubles match in the late afternoon.

Nestor is retiring following the Davis Cup in September.

Del Potro, who had a bye in the first round, was set to play Robin Haase of the Netherlands on Wednesday. In other second-round action Wednesday, second-seed Zverev defeated American Bradley Klahn.
