Blood pressure medication recalled over label mix-up that could prove deadly

A High Blood Pressure Medication Is Being Recalled After a Potentially 'Life-Threatening' Labeling Mistake

The individual lot is labeled PW05264.

Accord Healthcare voluntarily recalling one lot of 12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide tablets after a 100-count bottle of the drug was found to contain 100 tablets of another drug, spironolactone.

Instead of containing blood pressure medication, a bottle was found to contain spironolactone tablets, which are used to treat illnesses like congestive heart failure and cirrhosis of the liver.

A blood pressure medication has been recalled after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered that bottles of it contained another drug.

The effects of mixing up the medications - both help bodies get rid of extra salt and water - depend on the individual but can range from "limited" to "life-threatening", FDA officials said.

Accord hasn't received any reports of adverse health events related to this recall.

The Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are light orange to peach colored and round with H on one side and 1 on another side.

Meanwhile, Hydrochlorothiazide is used "as the sole therapeutic agent or to enhance the effectiveness of other antihypertensive drugs in the more severe forms of hypertension".

So far, there have been no reports of people getting sick as a result of the mix-up, the company said. Adverse events may be reported to FDA through its MedWatch program.

Spironolactone can be used to treat heart problems, high blood pressure, low potassium levels and fluid retention for some maladies, according to The affected drugs in that recall may have been contaminated with N-nitrosodimethylamine or NDMA, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers a possible carcinogen.
