August Is Breastfeeding Awareness Month

Breastfeeding challenges: Paediatrician urges mothers to seek medical help early

Breast milk is made of fats, sugars, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and enzymes and is created to promote brain and body growth.

Celebrated in more than 120 countries around the world, "World Breastfeeding Week" is an annual event held every year from August 1 to August 7. Other challenges can arise around a woman's milk supply or an infant's ability to latch on to the breast.

The report states: "The early initiation of breastfeeding - putting newborns to the breast within the first hour of life - is critical to newborn survival and to establishing breastfeeding over the long term".

Pakistan was among the 118 countries which had voted in favour of adopting worldwide code of marketing of breast milk substitutes during the World Health Assembly in May 1981.

In his Breastfeeding Awareness Month Proclamation, Governor Snyder stated that MI is committed to reducing infant mortality and increasing the health of mothers and babies.

HIV positive, breastfeeding mothers are given a fixed-dose combination drug that is a combination of two or more antiretroviral (ARV) drugs in one pill which allows them to also exclusively breastfeed their babies, preventing a mother-to-child transmission during the infant feeding period. If the mother is in anti-cancer medicine, hyperthyroid (antithyroid medicine) or a motherless child, they would need a guide.

Southwest Florida and Lee County Breast Coalition are taking steps to provide more support to mothers who struggle with breastfeeding.

Prof. Osawaru Oviawe, on his own part, stressed on maintaining the complete immunization doses for babies in addition to optimal breastfeeding up to six months, to build malaria antibodies as well as drive down asthma and eczema allergic reactions associated with milk substitutes.

After the first feed, babies are to be breastfed on demand that is whenever the baby shows signs of hunger day and night. Scientific evidence supports the importance of breastfeeding practices that reduce child mortality and morbidity, malnutrition, and non-communicable diseases. But what are the critical things we need to do, to ensure as many babies as possible get the healthiest start in life?

Breastfeeding has also been identified as a high-impact intervention to achieve the Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health (2016-2030), which was launched alongside the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a roadmap for ending preventable deaths in a generation.
