Arsenal vs Manchester City: 3 key battles in Emery’s league debut

An early Raheem Sterling goal and a second-half strike from Bernardo Silva proved to be enough on a comfortable afternoon for the champions.

He said: "It's his first match here in the Premier League".

Arsenal were soundly outplayed at the Emirates in Emery's first Premier League game in charge as City opened their title defence in a manner that underlined the difference in class between the two sides.

Pep Guardiola saluted Manchester City's stars for shaking off their World Cup fatigue as the champions made a flying start to the Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win against Arsenal. They embarrassed us badly a few times last season and they themselves will be feeling very confident as they begin the defence of their title.

"Mendy is Mendy. Sometime you want to kill him and sometimes you say "wow what a player we have", he said. "In the second half, we forced them to make mistakes and we had some opportunities".

That would mean leaving out one of Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette - with the Frenchman seemingly the most likely to get the chop.

MF Matteo Guendouzi, 5 - It was a huge call on Emery's part to select the youngster, who last season was playing in the second tier of French football. He'd liked to have scored a goal and he tried to, but I'm sure in the European qualifiers he will score goals for his country.

'We spoke also Petr did a very good pre-season, also today I think he played good also.

We've all seen how nonchalant Hazard can be when scoring from the spot, waiting for the goalkeeper to move and commit himself before casually rolling the ball in the opposite corner. It was a fantastic game for us, so now we have to keep going.

Arsenal needs to be calm and composed in their play in order to avoid a repeat of the recurrent blunders that plagued the side last season.

'Also he has this experience to continue defending our goal.

That won't be expected this year as Arsenal could potentially be a force, particularly if Lucas Torreira adds that defensive bite to the midfield and Stephan Lichtsteiner adds his voice of authority to the changing room.

Emery now has another week to work with his players before the London derby against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next weekend.
