OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research organisation cofounded by Elon Musk which aims to promote and develop friendly AI. Next step, is The International 2018 (T18), which is Valve's own Dota 2 major and considered one of the biggest e-sports tournaments in the world.
Past year a single OpenAI Dota 2 bot made a surprise appearance at Valve's International Dota 2 tournament held in Seattle and had a decisive victory playing against Danylo "Dendi" Ishutin, who having been beaten in the first two rounds declined to play the third. Through such reinforcement learning, the clutch of networks cooperate with each other, build "team spirit' and take down its in-game opponents". Not just any game of Dota mind you but a game of Dota against a team of former and current Dota 2 professionals.
Human vs. machine competitions provide a way of demonstrating computational power while also provoking existential reflection about what differentiates us from machines. "If we feel like we are being surpassed by our technology", he writes, "it's because we aren't pushing ourselves hard enough, aren't being ambitious enough in our goals and dreams".
Next up for OpenAI will be to take on one the best players in the world at The International 8, in September.
The humans won the final game, but only after the audience was allowed to select the bots' player characters, which put them at a significant advantage. This resulted in OpenAI Five predicting a lower chance of winning of the match - just 2.9 percent, in fact.
Its creators specifically chose Dota 2, as the game combines high-level strategy and fast decision making with a large pool of heroes, all of them with different skill sets.
Regardless, the OpenAI victory is incredible impressive, even more so because only a matter of months ago it was failing to beat amateur opposition.
