Worry and relief at EPA after Pruitt's exit

Embattled Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt directly appealed to President Donald Trump this spring to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions and let him run the Department of Justice instead

Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., author of the book The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future and who NRDC calls "without question the most virulent climate denier on Capitol Hill".

Since 2009, Andrew Wheeler - who was announced as the acting leader of the EPA after Scott Pruitt resigned Thursday - has lobbied for at least 17 companies, including Energy Fuels International, the largest supplier of uranium in the US.

When President Trump announced Pruitt as his pick to lead the EPA, evangelical leaders including 13 current and former presidents of the Southern Baptist Convention and 14 current and former SBC agency heads signed a letter vouching for him as "well qualified" for the position.

Trump said that Pruitt's work at the agency has been "outstanding" and, "I will always be thankful to him for this". "I look forward to working hard alongside all of you to continue our collective goal of protecting public health and the environment on behalf of the American people", he said.

Activists have argued those cuts have endangered the environment.

Not only was Scott Pruitt corrupt as hell, but he's also clearly insane. He made swamp creatures blush with his shameless excesses.

Despite his conservative background and his likely continuance of Trump's EPA agenda, Wheeler has previously criticized the President.

"A reminder that Adam Putnam is one of his biggest supporters in Florida", said Democratic spokesman Kevin Donohoe. But Pruitt had also been dogged for months by a seemingly unending string of scandals that spawned more than a dozen federal and congressional investigations.

The New York Times reports that Wheeler is a former coal lobbyist who, like Pruitt, wants to undo many environmental regulations.

"We do not deny the existence of climate change nor the urgency of this concern", the December 2016 letter read in part.

"We need an EPA administrator - and I know this is a radical idea - that actually believes in environmental protection", Sanders said, "rather than just the profits of the oil, gas or coal industry".

Scott Pruitt resigned as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday, and a top government watchdog released a simple but effective one-word statement on this development: "Good".

Wheeler, 53, could serve more than a year in an acting role. If you think that Donald Trump being elected was God's providence and that same providence from God brought you into Trump's service, then yeah, there's something not quite right happening inside of your brain. "The politics will pass but the policy will remain", Dempsey said.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt testifies before the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Environment Subcommittee in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill on April 26 in Washington, D.C. The focus of almost a dozen federal inquiries into his travel expenses, security practices and other issues, Pruitt testified about his agency's FY2019 budget proposal.

Some couldn't help pointing out Pruitt's grifter habits.

Pruitt's resignation came a week after several of his top aides spoke to the House Oversight Committee, which has been investigating Pruitt, and revealed new details of some of the ethical scandals that mired his time at EPA. Pruitt said his staff never told him the cost.

Pruitt is the latest Trump Cabinet official to lose his job over ethics issues.

His job had been in jeopardy since it emerged he had leased a property previous year that was co-owned by the wife of a veteran fossil fuels lobbyist, whose firm had sought regulatory rollbacks from the EPA.
