Owned by Facebook, WhatsApp's biggest market is India, with about 200 million users in the country. The statement states, "WhatsApp is commissioning a competitive set of awards to researchers interested in exploring issues that are related to misinformation on WhatsApp".

The instant messenger has said that users will now get to know if a shared message has been typed or forwarded and existing group admins will be able to get demoted to a member with limited rights.

To identify rumors and false news, the company has also started working with fact-checking organizations such as Boom Live in India.

Another tip urges WhatsApp users to "question information that upsets you" and, if they do read something that makes them "angry or afraid", to "think twice before sharing it again". The ad campaign sees full-page ads in a number of newspapers today, mentioning steps to check when a piece of news may be fake.

The Assam Police is now mulling into legal provisions to enforce stricter rules to check the circulation of fake news and spam messages on the popular messaging app, WhatsApp. "Our first step is placing newspaper advertisements in English and Hindi and several other languages".

"Be thoughtful of what you share", reads one. "We use machine learning to identify accounts sending a high volume of messages and we are constantly working to improve our ability to stop unwanted automated messages" the spokesperson added.

Five people were lynched to death by villagers in Maharashtra's Dhule district after videos of child lifters were actively circulated on a WhatsApp group. In a statement, Whatsapp said in part that it is "horrified by these bad acts of violence".

WhatsApp has previously said it is tweaking features and giving users controls in its effort to rein in false messages.

WhatsApp has been under pressure from Indian authorities lately for a slew of killings that allegedly originated from hoax messages sent on the app.
