Vegas takes wild journey to British Open

Vegas made it to Carnoustie in time for his round but without his clubs

Upon getting his visa on Wednesday morning, Vegas traveled from Houston to Glasgow, Scotland which included a stop in Toronto, Canada.

"Even though the journey seemed really insane and frustrating at times, I just thought someone was really playing a joke on me", Vegas said.

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland - Jhonattan Vegas shot 76 in the opening round of The Open at Carnoustie, but he has a pretty solid excuse.

"Even though this journey seemed insane and frustrating at times", Vegas said, "I just thought that somebody was really playing a joke on me".

He also had to overcome a courier error, then bad weather in NY forced him to fly from Houston to Toronto to Glasgow.

It all started last Thursday, when he realized he'd read the dates on his visa incorrectly and discovered it was out of date. "I guess I've been living in America too long", he joked. They responded on Monday morning, saying that I applied for the wrong visa. I mean, I waited - I literally waited in a auto in front of the consulate in Houston for seven hours, hoping for that visa to show up that day.

When the visa finally arrived on Wednesday, his flight connection through NY was cancelled, forcing him to route through Toronto.

"Showing up here and my clubs not showing up, I started laughing". His agent managed to arrange a helicopter ride from to Glasgow to Carnoustie to assure that Vegas would make it into his 10:31 a.m. tee time. Then I made a decision to start hitting the driver, and bad things started happening with that shot. "Luckily some of them were going forward, which was nice", he said.

Vegas was 1 over after eight holes before his scoring worsened when he started to use driver. "At the end of the day, I gave it a try".

"This is going from bad to worse but I will do everything to get to my tee time". "I wouldn't miss (The Open) for any means".
