Updates as Theresa May meets her new-look cabinet

But MPs from the rival Labour Party attended a briefing on its specifics-a sure sign that May thinks they may be needed to get it passed through parliament.

British Prime Minister Theresa May named Jeremy Hunt to the job of foreign secretary, after the resignation of Boris Johnson on Monday. He said "the Brexit dream is dying, suffocated by needless self doubt".

Earlier on Monday, the prime minister's office also announced the appointment of Dominic Raab as Brexit secretary, replacing Davis. That plan is now in tatters and her political future appears uncertain.

British Prime Minister Theresa May dug in her heels today after the resignation of two top government ministers over Brexit negotiations whipped up a storm that threatened to topple her fragile minority government.

Davis resigned yesterday, saying May's plan to maintain close trade and regulatory ties with the European Union gave "too much away, too easily". But leading pro-Brexit lawmaker Jacob Rees-Mogg said he did not think she would face a leadership challenge. Britain is due to leave the European Union in nine months, and its governing party is still arguing about what kind of relationship it wants with the bloc afterward.

To me, it looks like the buyers are buying the Brexit dips in anticipation of a rate hike and better economic news.

May, having finally signalled her vision for Brexit, spent two hours in parliament defiantly defending the plans and called for Brussels to engage fully or risk the damaging prospect of Britain leaving the bloc with no deal in place.

She took her entire cabinet to her country residence on Friday to try to get agreement on a United Kingdom vision for post-Brexit relations. Along with that, Germany gave an immediate thumbs down to the latest Brexit proposals.

Johnson quit on Monday over May's plan for Brexit, which includes a free-trade area for goods but little detail on the approach to services.

When asked whether May would contest any vote on a confidence motion in her leadership, her spokesman said: "Yes".

Under her proposal, a treaty would be signed committing the UK to "continued harmonisation" with EU rules - avoiding friction at the UK-EU border, including Northern Ireland.

Blaming the resigning Brexiteers for the chaos, Mr Tusk said: "Politicians come and go, while the problems they have created for their people remain".

Matt Hancock MP, formerly the Culture Secretary, has been appointed the new Health Secretary.
