The Blockbuster from 'Last Week Tonight' just closed

The management team behind the last two Blockbuster stores in Alaska announced on Thursday that the Anchorage and Fairbanks locations would close on Monday.

Blockbuster Alaska District Manager Kelli Vey and General Manager Kevin Daymude took to Facebook to issue the following message regarding the Alaskan closures.

And the Anchorage location had recently gotten national attention when Last Week Tonight host John Oliver sent the store a collection of Russell Crowe memorabilia, including the actor's jockstrap from his 2005 film "Cinderella Man". Despite the fact both locations are still pulling a profit, owner Alan Payne says it no longer makes sense to renew either store's leases, which expire in August.

While Blockbusters began disappearing across the U.S.in 2013, Alaska remained a lucrative market for the rental video company. We have thought of you as family for the past 28 years.

"We will miss all of you!"

"We hope to see you at our stores during the closing, even if it's just to say "Hello, '" the final two shops" managers posted in a Facebook announcement on Thursday.

"You would not believe how much business we got just from that memorabilia alone", he said.

Two of Blockbuster's last three stores will close on Sunday.

Blockbuster gave in and declared bankruptcy in 2010, and its remaining 1,700 stores were bought by Dish Network in 2011. The movie and video game rental service was one of the most popular stores in the 90's and early 00's.

Blockbuster formally closed all company-owned stores by January 2014, leaving franchisees to fend for themselves. She said she has been working at Blockbuster for 14 years and seen her share of heartache as stores closed. According to Deadline, at Blockbuster's peak it had "more than 9,000 stores, half outside the United States, and employed more than 84,000 people worldwide". But Blockbuster faithfuls knew it could never replace the authenticity of a physical store.

But their survival lasted longer in Alaska, with some crediting expensive internet as a factor in keeping many people renting videos rather than streaming.
