'Serial killer' Jose Gilberto Rodriguez arrested in Texas

Houston Police

Police in southeast Texas have identified a parolee as a "possible serial killer" suspected in a series of homicides in the Houston area. On Tuesday morning, officials say Jose Gilberto Rodriguez, 46, was spotted in a dark Nissan Sentra, a vehicle that belonged to one of the murder victims.

Jose Gilberto Rodriguez was spotted in a vehicle that belonged to one of the murder victims and was apprehended in Harris County after fleeing in the auto, according to ABC 13.

Rodriguez's arrest came hours after the sheriff warned of "a possible serial killer" on the loose.

Edward Magana was found dead Monday in a nearby Mattress One store, where the 57-year-old father of four from El Salvador worked, KPRC-TV reported.

"On behalf of the Sheriff's Office and the Houston Police Department, we do wish condolences to the families of the victims impacted in all of this and we are just glad nobody else got hurt", the sheriff said. An imprisoned Rodriguez received another 10-year sentence for possession of a deadly weapon inside a penitentiary.

"He cut his monitor just a matter of days ago, and next thing you know we believe he's involved in this", Acevedo said.

During the news conference, police said they were not searching for any additional suspects and that Rodriguez had not said anything to authorities thus far.

Authorities, who believe Rodriguez was on the hunt for his next victim when he was caught, have not offered details on the evidence allegedly linking him to the crimes.

He struck again Saturday, slaying 28-year-old Allie Barrow inside a Mattress Firm near the mall, CBS reported. On Saturday, Johnson's missing PT Cruiser was found about a dozen miles away in the parking lot of Willowbrook Mall.

Rodriguez also is a suspect in the robbery, shooting and wounding of a metro bus driver on Monday and a home invasion robbery on July 9, investigators said. Surveillance video showed a man, believed to be Rodriguez entering the mall and exiting out the other side. The resident called police, who responded and found Rodriguez allegedly still in the vehicle.

Police say Rodriguez killed three people since Friday.

Rodriguez tried to rob a driver at gunpoint Monday, shooting the victim and leaving him in critical condition, officials said. Gonzalez had tweeted that he's "considered a serial killer, armed and unsafe".

They found the body of a Mattress One store sales rep inside the store in the 4400 block of I-45 near Crosstimbers.
