NATO Members Defend Military Contributions Amid Trump's Demands

Nato members keep wary eye on Trump's mood

"It will be over a relatively short period of years", Trump said.

"There is a communique that was published yesterday. It's very detailed", Macron said, according to France 24. (It's one of three countries to have passed a law mandating an increase to 2 percent.) Since Trump began advocating for countries to hit that goal, 16 have increased spending relative to GDP by at least 5 percent; six of those countries had already increased by at least 5 percent during the two prior years as well.

In an unexpected twist, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders held an unplanned emergency session on the last day of their two-day summit, which has been upended by Trump's attacks on allies over defense spending.

And while all member nations have agreed, in principle, to work toward the 2 percent spending goal, each country is ultimately beholden to unique political processes and must consult with their respective parliaments to secure increased military spending. Poles remain grateful to U.S. President Ronald Reagan's role in defeating communism and see the United States as its only real power that could protect it from falling under Moscow's control again.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a press conference on the second day of the NATO Summit in Brussels, Belgium, on July 12, 2018.

"The American president demanded what has been discussed for months, that there is a change in the burden sharing", Merkel said. I'm very strong on immigration. "And I know that's valued very highly over here and people can disagree strongly and still go out to dinner". But the vehemence of Trump's on-camera breakfast attack on Germany for its backing of a second Nord Stream gas pipeline, and for being "captive" to Russian Federation came as a shock.

Trump also said he expected Iran to call him one day with an offer to allay United States security concerns, saying Tehran was treating Washington with much more respect after he pulled the U.S. out of a nuclear deal.

"Everyone in the room thanked me", he said.

The meeting brought together Mr Trump and Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau, who irritated the United States president at the G7 by declaring that his country would not be pushed around.

But just days out from a high-stakes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, the mercurial USA leader threatened to throw the transatlantic alliance into disarray.

Trump has said next week's meeting with Putin "may be the easiest" part of his European tour.

Trump also said he is "not happy about Crimea", referring to the fact Russian Federation annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine in 2014.

When asked how that conversation might go, Trump said, "He may deny it".

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported Trump as saying "I'll do my own thing" if spending is not immediately increased.
