‘Miracle’ baby found safe in Montana forest after being buried alive

Deputy Finds Baby in Woods After 6-Hour Search in Missoula, Montana

The baby suffered "minor scrapes and bruising but overall is in good health", and is in the care of Child and Family Services, according to the sheriff's office. "Sheriff (T.J.) McDermott would like to thank those who assisted in the search and those who called 911, helping first responders bring this baby to safety", the statement said.

According to the Missoula County Sheriff's Office, the desperate search for the baby unfolded after deputies received reports at about 8 p.m. Saturday about a man acting strangely near Lolo Hot Springs, about 35 miles outside of Missoula, Montana.

The infant was in good condition at a hospital after being left alone for "several hours", the Missoula County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

A 5-month-old baby was left partially buried in the mountains of Montana for at least nine hours before being discovered by a Missoula County Sheriff's deputy.

Deputies later apprehended Crowley at the Hot Springs area, and they say he made statements indicating that the baby was buried somewhere in the mountains, according to the sheriff's office.

A while later, Crowley turned up again at the hot springs, and police were able to take him into custody. They say they won't be confirming names to protect the baby's identity.

After more than six hours of searching, a deputy heard the baby crying.

A 5-month-old baby was in good condition at a Missoula County, Mont. hospital Sunday morning after being rescued by police who responded to calls of a man who was "acting odd". When found, the sheriff's office said the baby was "clothed in only a wet and soiled onesie".

Francis Carlton Crowley [Police Handout]Police wrote that a "faint cry" led a deputy to the 5-month-old, who was lying face down under a heap of sticks and rubble.

Crowley was being held on 50,000 bail on a charge of criminal endangerment. 'For the officers who were present for this event, its [sic] especially hard knowing what this small baby endured in the last 24 hours.

Missoula County officials say more charges are likely to be filed against 32-year-old Francis Crowley of Portland, Oregon, who is scheduled to be in court Tuesday afternoon. Crowley was released when OR officials decided not to extradite him, Deputy Missoula County Attorney Jason Marks said.

There remain unanswered questions about this case, such as who left the baby in Crowley's care and if they have given any statement to the police.
