Microsoft Announces Smaller, Cheaper Surface Go

Microsoft Surface affordable tablet passes the FCC

The company posted a slightly enigmatic tweet on its Surface account today that asks "Where will Surface go next?"

The Go retains the Surface's 3:2 aspect ratio, while the 10-inch IPS touchscreen sports an 1800 x 1200 resolution. Pre-orders for the Surface Go starts July 10, with shipments set to begin from August 2 in the US.

The Type Cover, of course, is the detachable keyboard for the Surface. Not only did a mysterious Surface device recently make a pass through the FCC, but now Microsoft is possibly prepping retailers for a launch that could be coming up quickly.

The Surface Go kickstand also utilizes a brand new hinge that allows it to extend 165 degrees so that you can go from tablet mode to studio mode when you want to write or draw on it.

The device includes the frequently requested USB-C port in addition to the Surface Connect port, a headphone jack, SD card reader and a built-in stand.

Microsoft quietly has shifted its goal for Surface hardware from carving out new niches which can be exploited by Microsoft and its OEM partners, to expanding the overall market for Surface.

For typing, you'll still need to buy a type cover separately. The improved keyboard features are available on the Surface Go Signature Type Cover. And while they have not listed a price either, I would expect it to add a $150 premium based on price differences with the Surface Pro line of LTE versions.

The Surface Go's CPU is a 1.60 GHz, two-core, four-thread, 2MB cache Pentium Gold 4415y.

The newly-leaked document doesn't reveal anything else about the device, but given the number of leaks it has already suffered, there's not much we don't know.

Microsoft further claims that the Surface Go gets 9 hours of battery life, which comes with the caveat that this was tested by playing a video file that was stored on the device.

As we previously reported, the base $400 system will likely be equipped with the Pentium Silver N5000 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

The price for the actual Surface Go starts from $399 for the 4/64 GB version and goes to $549 for the 8/128 GB variant. An LTE cellular data version will be released later this year, the company said.

One interesting addition on the Surface Go is a Near Field Sensor.

Surface Go is running Windows 10 Home in S mode (which you can turn off for free), though schools will be able to purchase the Surface Go with Windows 10 Pro via commercial channels for an extra $50.
