The St. Louis Cardinals have fired Manager Mike Matheny and both of his hitting coaches. He'll end his Cardinals tenure with a 591-473 record. "I would like to thank Mike for his exceptional commitment and devotion to the Cardinals organization, including many fond memories of our years working together".
The Cardinals said DeWitt and Mozeliak would hold a press conference on Sunday to discuss the move and additional staff changes. "I personally feel like I let him down".

Then again, the standards for Cardinals fans and personnel alike are higher than those of most ballclubs. But St. Louis missed the postseason in 2016 and 2017, and a third straight year out of the playoffs would have put Matheny on the hot seat heading into 2019. Furthermore, the Cardinals certainly didn't expect to take a step backwards following key additions like Marcell Ozuna and Bud Norris, along with a wealth of young talent coming up through the farm system.
One of Mike Matheny's former players said it about as well as you could. The Cardinals have underperformed on offense and struggled in recent weeks amid reports of locker room discontent - primarily between struggling outfielder Dexter Fowler and Matheny.
