Lions don't select any players in 2018 National Football League supplemental draft

There is, however, one player pool into which the Buccaneers have not dipped in a very long time. They were one of 30 teams not to make a selection. They have a bidding system based on the grade of draft pick they are willing to give up in next year's draft in order to take a player in the supplemental draft.

Beal and Alexander figure to interest Indianapolis the most. He was considered to be a potential third-round talent had he entered the 2018 NFL Draft. Although he has average speed, he is very aggressive and can take receivers out of the play if he gets the upper hand early. Still, a prospect worthy of a mid-round selection in Wednesday's draft.

Players may be granted eligibility into the supplemental draft for various reasons, though the most common are for academic ineligibility or dismissal from their college team for the upcoming season. It only takes one team, after all. In 1988, Minnesota used a fifth-round draft pick to acquire SC wide receiver Ryan Bethea and haven't utilized the system to add another player since. Arguably the best prospect to ever come through the supplemental draft, Western Michigan's Sam Beal is a feel-good story that should entice a team to move on from a 2019 draft pick for him in this year's draft. If a team, especially a contender, spends a second round pick on him, I won't be mad.

The other two players available are less likely to be drafted Wednesday: Grand Valley State running back Marty Carter and Oregon State linebacker Bright Ugwoegbu. So, why is Beal in the supplemental draft?

That trend is likely to change on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with five talented prospects throwing their respective hats into the National Football League ring.

Those first 10 teams all submit blind bids if they wish to select any of the players in the current round. This year is different; there's three. For some teams, his academic and off-field issues have made him a player on whom they'll pass.

In 2017, Beal started all 11 games in which he played and had 26 tackles, a career-high 12 pass breakups, and both of his interceptions.

For instance, if the Chiefs put in a third-round bid for Beal, and Beal is awarded to the Chiefs, they would lose a third-round selection in 2019.

It's not necessarily a bad thing that the Chiefs didn't reach for Beal with a second-round draft pick.

The highest-profile supplemental pick of recent vintage would be Josh Gordon, the Baylor receiver taken by Cleveland with a second-round pick in 2012. In this case, they grabbed Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal with the third pick of the third round.

Browns fans are more familiar with this process than most teams. Alexander was poised to return for his senior season but elected to leave school after being declared academically ineligible for the 2018 season. That turn of events angered several other teams and directly led to a change in the way the Supplemental Draft is conducted.
