Keri Russell joins the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX

'Star Wars Episode IX' Taps Keri Russell For Role

Episode IX in an unspecified role. They finally decided on Russell for the role earlier this week.

But as ever, there will be a host of new characters, and it has been reported the The Americans star Keri Russell has joined the cast. Abrams, who created her series Felicity, which ran from 1998-2002.

Little is known about Russell's role in the film, but the outlet notes that it will call for action-heavy fight scenes. Abrams is directing the upcoming Star Wars film and has been spending most of his time working on the script with Lawrence Kasdan. Following Colin Trevorrow's exit over creative differences, Abrams - who directed The Force Awakens - was asked to return to direct Episode IX.

Russell, of course, is no stranger to action, as her past credits include Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Mission Impossible III.

Some fans speculate Russell may play Rey's mother in a flashback and, given the circumstances in which Rey was left, you can assume there will be some fighting involved. Star Wars: The Last Jedi filmmaker Rian Johnson is developing a new trilogy for Lucasfilm, making Abrams the most obvious person to step in and fill the void. Abrams is looking to cast two more roles before filming officially begins. If Star Wars had a dating profile, we'd say it has a type. Previously set for a May 24, 2019 release date, the film will now arrive on December 20, 2019.
