Inspect all childcare homes run by Missionaries of Charity: Maneka tells States

Nuns of the Missionaries of Charity the order founded by Mother Teresa walk in annual Corpus Christi procession organized on the Feast of Christ the King in Kolkata India in 2016

The order came after a nun and an employee were arrested earlier this month for allegedly selling a baby in the eastern state of Jharkhand.

"We are getting many leads but we can not divulge them as of now", Ranchi Superintendent of Police Anish Gupta was quoted by the Times as saying.

On July 3, Saurav and Preeti Agrawal from UP's Sonebhadra district approached the Ranchi Child Welfare Centre (CWC) with a complaint that Indwar, who allegedly sold them a newborn boy in May, had taken back the child on the pretext of completing court formalities and had returned him. SSP Gupta stated that sister Konsalia, who was arrested on July 5, confessed to the selling of three babies to three persons.

The police this month arrested the nun and a worker at one of the Missionaries of Charity order's homes in Ranchi, Jharkhand state, over allegations that at least five infants were sold for up to thousands of dollars. The newspaper said that he was bought by a couple living near Ranchi.

"Taking cognisance of the recent cases of illegal adoptions carried out by Missionaries of Charity in Jharkhand, [minister for women and children] Maneka Gandhi has instructed the states to get childcare homes run by Missionaries of Charity all over the country inspected immediately", the ministry said in a statement.

Since then some 2,300 childcare institutions have been linked to the Central Adoption Resource Authority and about 4,000 are still pending, according to the government.

The Catholic Bishop Conference of India general secretary Theodore Mascarenhas had claimed that the sister told the MoC lawyer on July 11 that she was not involved in the baby selling racket and her statement was taken "under pressure" by the police.

INDIAN authorities are searching Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity facilities for evidence of baby trafficking.

Teresa, who died in 1997, was recognized by the Vatican as a saint in 2016.

The revelation has sparked national outcry within India.
