Fernando Torres' new club appears to be Japanese side Sagan Tosu after his arrival was leaked.
A World Cup and European championship victor with Spain, Torres made his final appearance for Atletico as a late substitute in Madrid's Europa League final win over Marseille.
The move comes after Torres made a decision to join J-League strugglers Sagan Tosu instead of coming Down Under, with Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory keen to sign the former Atletico Madrid hitman. "My new team will be Sagan Tosu of Japan", the 34-year-old Torres said at an event held at the gym he owns in Madrid on Tuesday.
"Although the signing is not closed, we had prepared a draft due to its likelihood", read a statement.
"Sagan Tosu were one of the first clubs to be interested in me, they have convinced me with the project".
He said he planned to make his debut for Sagan Tosu on July 22.
FFA's initial proposal was viewed as less appealing once Spanish income tax legislation was accounted for and while Torres' management asked for an improved offer, it was not forthcoming.
"I have had offers from France, Germany and even one from Spain, but at no point did I ever think about going to another European team".
The Spaniard has enjoyed an illustrious 16 years in top-flight football, including spells at Liverpool, Chelsea and in the Serie A with AC Milan.
Both players might be fighting for different objectives, as Iniesta's new team are now in sixth place, while Torres' club are 17th out of 18.
Torres is following in the footsteps of his World Cup and European Championship-winning team-mate Andres Iniesta, who recently joined Japanese side Vissel Kobe after leaving Barcelona.
