Indian record holder to cut world's longest fingernails after 66 years

Shridhar Chillal of India displays his newly cut fingernails at an announcement that the five fingernails he grew for 66 year

Shridhar Chillal, of Pune, India, hadn't cut the fingernails on his left hand since 1952, when he was 14 and a teacher got mad at him for breaking a nail. The Guardian says the teacher told Chillal that he wouldn't understand what it meant to protect a nail unless he grew them himself.

They were only fingernails, but to Shridhar Chillal, cutting them off probably felt a bit like cutting off his own hand.

Shridhar Chillal's extraordinarily long nails have now gone on display at the Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum in NY.

When last measured, his nails had a combined length of 909.6 cm (29 ft 10.1 in), about the same length as a London bus.

Chillal's teacher's words proved true, the world-record holder said he had to take delicate care of his nails and he took care of them for a lifetime. The Guinness World Record holder is now finally said goodbye to his nails in an emotional farewell.

While Chillal holds the world record for longest fingernails on one hand, the current record for longest nails on both hands goes to Ayanna Williams of Houston, Texas, reported HuffPost. I spent 66 years of my life on my nails.

"I can't move much, so every half an hour or so I wake up and move my hand to the other side of the bed", he told Guinness World Records in 2015. "While he may have cut his fingernails, his nails will be forever memorialized inside Ripley's Believe It or Not!". Due to years of growing his nails and their weight, his left hand is permanently handicapped; he can not open his hand from a closed position or flex his fingers. His longest nail was on his thumb.

But he made a decision to cut away an important part of his life earlier this week when he flew to NY to have the nails removed by a doctor. A nail technician performed the surgery armed with power tools at a ceremony in the Times Square Ripley's museum on Wednesday.
