Indian opposition leader Gandhi startles bitter foe Modi with a hug

Rafale deal details classified says France over Rahul's claims

On Wednesday, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan announced that the House would take up the debate on #NoConfidenceMotion moved by many Opposition parties on issues like special status to Andhra Pradesh, cow vigilantism, atrocities against women and Dalits and alleged dilution of the SC/ST Act and lynching, on Friday, 20th July 2018.

The vote is the first no-confidence motion to be approved by India's lower house in 15 years, though it is unlikely to trouble the BJP, who continue to hold a significant parliamentary majority.

The film star turned political leader also clarified that he will not quit BJP and continue to serve the party in 2019 elections also.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi's hug to PM Modi and his eye winking action to the Prime Minister remained the talking point of the day.

It seemed like Rahul Gandhi had bottled up his emotions for too long and all of those feelings came out when he said: "You can abuse me, you can call me Pappu, but I don't have any hatred against you". The government won the motion by 325 against 126 votes.

Sharply criticised for his reported remarks that "Congress is a Muslim party", Rahul Gandhi said, "Prime Minister Modi, BJP and.have taught me what it means to be a Congress person, the meaning of being a real Indian, and what it means to be a real Hindu".

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi in his speech slammed the Modi government over its performance in four years so far.

Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Friday took potshots at Congress president Rahul Gandhi, asking what he had today before coming to Parliament, while claiming that the opposition leader had accused Punjabis of being "nashedi" (drug addicts). Everyone understands the Prime Minister's relations with some businessmen.

On Tuesday, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had said the party was undecided on supporting the no-confidence motion that the TDP sought to move in Parliament.

Critics accuse the BJP of divisive politics and of trying to undermine India's pluralistic foundations enshrined in the constitution.

The current NDA strength is 314 excluding the Speaker, with the BJP having 273 MPs +.

Startled by Gandhi's gesture, Modi froze in his seat but later called Gandhi back to his seat and shook hands, smiling. "He's not a chowkidaar (watchman) but a bhagidar (co-conspirator)", Gandhi said. But on a day where the mention of Amit Shah's son and an unexpected hug had become the news, Modi needed to do more to wrest back control of the narrative, and that did not seem to happen.
