Hurricane Chris strengthens, stays well off U.S. Atlantic Coast
On Friday Beryl became the first hurricane of this Atlantic season before weakening.
If the storm hits as expected, there could be some damage to coastal infrastructure, and potential flooding, especially on the southern Avalon.
The current path will keep it away form land between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast.as it moves towards Newfoundland.
Wednesday we will see an increase of moisture as Chris pushes out into the Atlantic.
The storm will generate unsafe surf conditions and life-threatening rip currents along the North Carolina and mid-Atlantic coasts the next few days as it continues to speed away from the USA, forecasters said.
However, this doesn't mean that the weather conditions in the United Kingdom won't be impacted by Storm Chris, as wet and windy weather conditions are now expected.
The National Hurricane Center's latest briefing said its maximum sustained winds have increased to almost 85 miles per hour with higher gusts. Also, a fire weather watch was issued for parts of central California and western Nevada, where winds could gust 40 to 50 miles per hour near thunderstorms. Its center will be near southeastern Newfoundland Thursday night.
Forecasters also expect Chris to produce one to three inches of rain over Newfoundland.
The disturbance is forecast to turn northward over the western Atlantic on Wednesday where upper-level winds could become a little more conducive for the redevelopment.
Weather forecasters say Tropical Storm Chris has reached hurricane strength while moving away from the USA coast in the Atlantic.
