Hero or villain? Trump's court pick is in for a fight

Trump chose the 53-year-old federal appellate judge for the seat opened up by the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Many Democrats fear that Kavanaugh's conservative credentials - in a bench that is now tied 4-4 between liberal and conservative justices- will tilt the court right for the foreseeable future, allowing a rewriting of everything from hard won rights on abortion to same-sex marriage.

They say Trump's trying to tilt the nine justices in the highest court in the land towards the conservative right.

Trump said that Kavanaugh has "impeccable credentials" and is "universally regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time".

"We look forward to the confirmation process, which will unfold in the next few weeks", McConnell said, ignoring a question about whether Democrats would support the nomination. Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia - are also seen as possible votes for the nominee.

On abortion, Kavanaugh voted in October to delay an abortion for a teenage immigrant who was in government custody.

Also, they might win the House of Representatives this November. In the case decided Monday that had to do with attorneys' fees, there would be no majority if Kavanaugh were to withdraw. If confirmed, he would nearly certainly continue the Supreme Court's run of business-friendly rulings in contentious, precedent-setting cases that have weakened labor unions and class-action lawsuits in recent years.

"Obviously that's one of the cases that I'm sure i'll be discussing with him", Collins said.

"President Trump with the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh has fulfilled two of his campaign promises - first to undo women's reproductive freedom and second to undo the ACA, ' Schumer told CBS" 'This Morning.' 'So I will oppose him with everything I've got'.

If confirmed by the Senate, he would replace Justice Kennedy, who served on the bench for 30 years and was appointed to the position by President Ronald Reagan. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., a longtime member of the Judiciary Committee.

Now let me hasten to add that I don't know Mr. Bartlett, have only been to Maine once in my life (many years ago), and do not possess a single clue as to whether Democrats in that state would even consider making this extremely unselfish Supreme gesture, and if so, whether it could be enforced on potential candidates.

No confirmation hearings have yet been scheduled for Kavanaugh but the judicial nominee is scheduled to meet with Orrin Hatch of Utah, a seven-term senator and former chair of the Senate judiciary committee, on Wednesday.

"He's demonstrated a hostility to the Affordable Care Act that the Trump administration is continually working to undermine", Democratic Sen.

Three Democratic senators sure to face tremendous pressure over whether to back President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee have been invited to Monday's White House announcement of the pick.

WASHINGTON ― In 2005, a group of workers at a meatpacking plant in Brooklyn voted to join a union. "We unite in our common belief that Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh is a good man, a brilliant jurist, and is eminently qualified to serve as an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court".

Bob Salera, a campaign spokesman for Senate Republicans, said Casey has "given up any pretense of being a moderate voice" by opposing Trump's nominee sight unseen. While President Trump has made his loyalty to corporations and disdain for women and minorities known over the past 18 months, the confirmation of a justice who shares his loyalties will leave a permanent imbalance on the court and could erode the rights of millions.
