Girl, 7, killed on I-94 after dad's traffic accident

DeSandra Thomas

DeSandra Thomas was riding in her father's auto when he crashed into an abandoned vehicle along I-94 in Romulus, Mich., lost control and flew off the highway and through a fence, according to Michigan State Police.

"You have a dad that now lost his daughter because of drinking and driving".

That was at about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday. Police said the girl was looking for help after her father crashed their auto into an abandoned vehicle near Merriman around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

It was a "short time later" that Michigan State Police learned that the Romulus Police Department had been receiving texts from the girl and that the department was investigating an alleged drunk driving crash.

As the 7-year-old was trying to cross the highway median, she was hit by a auto.

The driver's daughter, a 7-year-old girl identified by WJBK as Dessandra Thomas, texted with police following the crash because her phone couldn't make calls. "He has to live the rest of his life knowing that his daughter is not here anymore", she says.

The7-year-old girl then attempted to cross the interstate to find help when she was struck by the vehicle Michigan State Police Officers were investigating, authorities said. She tried calling 911, then sent a text to 911.

She was struck while trying to cross the freeway and died instantly.

Shaw recounted the incident in a Twitter video.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for DeSandra's funeral.

The driver of the auto that hit the young girl has been released, while the father of the girl, who was allegedly drunk driving, is in police custody.

The girls father was arrested as his accident involved alcohol, the state police reported.

"She was a handsome thing, she was on her way to the third grade".

Sandria, who had Dessandra after 20 years of trying to have a baby added: 'She was 7 years old - she would give you the shirt off her back.

"I love her and I miss her so much".

In an interview with Fox 2 later Sunday, Thomas's mother, Sandria Burts, said she was at work when police delivered the news about her daughter.
