LAPD then reported that a SWAT team entered the residence to find Honeycutt dead on the scene. At approximately 2:30am SWAT located an unresponsive male inside the residence. It was unclear whether Honeycutt shot himself or was shot by police.
According to authorities, LAPD was dispatched to a residence at Sherman Oaks after Honeycutt's mother called around 5 p.m. PT on Friday claiming her son was "acting erratically". No officers were injured and it's unknown if the suspect was struck.
The fire department responded to the incident, the department said, and pronounced the suspect dead. The LAPD later stated on Twitter that Tyler "appears to have sustained injuries consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound".
Demarcus Cousins, who played alongside Tyler for the Kings, tweeted, "RIP Tyler Honeycutt..." When officers arrived, the man opened fire at the officers, who returned fire.
Honeycutt played two seasons at UCLA from 2009 to 2011 and then spent two seasons with the Sacramento Kings after being taken in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft. In the National Basketball Association, he had registered 24 games with the Sacramento Kings.
A family member on Saturday confirmed to KABC that Honeycutt had died.
He had been playing overseas since 2013. "May he rest in peace". He spent time with EuroCup team BC Khimki (2014-15) and EuroLeague's Khimki Moscow Region (2015-16, 17-18) and Anadolu Efes (2016-17). "Prayers up for his family and friends".
