Explosion rocks chemicals factory near Cairo's airport

Witnesses reported the blast after hearing a loud noise, and images of flames and smoke were shared on social media.

There are very few details as yet, but there has been a massive explosion near Egypt's Cairo International Airport.

A large explosion was heard in Cairo on Thursday evening.

Flights were briefly suspended while officials investigated the nature of the explosion, according to the Reuters news agency.

He said air movement at the airport had been "unaffected".

Egyptian state television reported that firefighters had brought the fire under control.

The blast is believed to have been the result of two fuel storage tanks, owned by a petrochemical company, catching fire and exploding outside the airport perimeter.

Egypt's flagship airline EgyptAir has dismissed reports that its London-Cairo flight ms780 experienced technical difficulties mid-flight while en route to Cairo.
