Describing her ordeal, the victim told police that Ravi Kumar, 66, an elevator operator first sexually assaulted her.

The police have arrested 17 people, including the society's security guard, and produced them before a magistrate on Tuesday afternoon.

Those arrested included a liftman, security guards, plumbers, electricians and other maintenance staff working at the apartment complex in Ayanavaram locality where the girl lived with her family and where she was allegedly sexually assaulted several times. While the accused were being presented before the court, lawyers along with others present at the court unleashed a brazen attack on the accused of raping a minor for months. The victim identified all the accused, police said. The video of the assault has gone viral. Apart from the brutal thrashing, the lawyers have also refused to represent the accused at in Chennai minor gangrape case.

The rapes were revealed when the girl confided in her older sister, who in turn told their parents. They also videographed themselves in the act and would threaten the girl to stay quiet in return to not leaking the tapes. Her examination reportedly confirmed she had been raped by many men.

Moideen Kutty, a businessman was taken into custody from Shornur and brought to a police station in Changaramkulam for questioning after visuals of the incident, captured on CCTV in the theatre. They videotaped the rape and threatened the girl, telling her not to tell anybody and to come whenever they called.

In India, the stigma associated with being sexually assaulted often deters women and girls - as well as boys and men - from reporting abuse.

A senior officer probing the case said the child was living with her mother while her father, a businessman, and an elder sister, were living in a different city.

The investigating officer said that the perpetrators would sedate the child with injections, give her drug-laced drinks or even made her sniff some sort of powder and then take her to the secluded parts of the complex and then rape her. The girl had been taken to Kilpauk Medical College for treatment.
