The national weather forecaster says the storm is now off the coast of Carolina and is expected to begin moving northeast later today. The hurricane has reached winds of 85 miles per hour, making it a Category 1 storm and the second named hurricane for the Atlantic season.

Tropical storm Chris continues to linger off the North and SC coasts.

The Met Office are warning of the chance of some showers on Wednesday afternoon on what is set to be a cloudy day for long periods, with the outlook for Friday including the chance of thunderstorms.

As of 5 p.m. the hurricane continued to churn just over 200 miles off the coast of North Carolina and move in a northeasterly direction.

A hurricane across the Atlantic may "influence" Britain's hot weather possibly bringing wind and rain next week. It's expected to remain "well offshore" of the US coast, forecasters say, instead steadily heading for Newfoundland while picking up forward speed through Thursday night. This means rough surf and risky rip currents.

Hurricane Chris is expected to pass south of Nova Scotia on Thursday, creating high waves along the Atlantic coast. "However, the disturbance is expected to turn northward over the western Atlantic on Wednesday where upper-level winds could become a little more conducive for the regeneration of a tropical cyclone later this week".

The swells generated by Chris could also cause could cause "life-threatening surf" conditions, according to the National Hurricane Center.
