British foreign minister Boris Johnson resigned on Monday, following former-Brexit minister David Davis out of the cabinet just days after Prime Minister Theresa May secured a hard-won agreement from senior ministers on an European Union exit strategy.
Davis's resignation may also further disrupt Brexit talks, with less than nine months before Britain leaves and just over three before the European Union says it wants a deal that will mark Britain's biggest foreign and trade policy shift in decades.
- Davis, 69, was a surprise appointment to May's cabinet when she took power in 2016, shortly after Britons had voted in favour of leaving the European Union. Sources close to Jacob Rees-Mogg have always said that he supports the prime minister, and appears to be urging colleagues not to do so....
In an interview with the BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Mr Davis said Mr Raab would be "very effective" in the post.
Mr Davis was appointed Brexit secretary in 2016 and was responsible for negotiating the United Kingdom withdrawal from the EU.
Mrs May will address Parliament later on the plan agreed at Chequers on Friday as well as address Tory MPs as she seeks to keep her Brexit strategy on track.
British media reported that junior Brexit ministers Steve Baker and Suella Braverman had also resigned.
Yours ever, David Davis.
"May's Brexit means BRINO - "Brexit In Name Only" - a fake Brexit", said John Longworth, co-chairman of Leave Means Leave.
The 69-year-old had reportedly threatened to quit several times over a perceived lack of firmness in Britain's negotiating stance but had remained strictly loyal to the prime minister in public.
George Freeman, May's former policy chief, said on Twitter that a "no deal" Brexit "just got a lot more likely".
The vast majority of Tory MPs, although far from happy with the current state of May's government, are not yet convinced that the solution is to replace the prime minister.
After the hours-long meeting at Chequers, May seemed to have persuaded the most vocal Brexit campaigners in the cabinet, including Davis, to back her plan to press for "a free trade area for goods" with the European Union and maintain close trade ties. Environment Secretary Michael Gove said Sunday that it did not contain everything he wanted but "I'm a realist".
She said the government's Brexit plan was "far from perfect" but marked "grown-up steps".
Davis opposed the PM's plan approved at her country residence, Chequers, on Friday.
She stamped her authority on her government and told ministers to back the plan for close ties to the bloc or leave. He called a meeting of the group on Monday.
"A very soft Brexit means that we haven't left, we are simply a rule-taker", he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Saturday.
