Beryl weakens to tropical storm; Tropical Depression 3 getting better organized

New predictions for hurricanes, storms in the Caribbean this season

Tropical Storm Beryl, a compact, fast-moving system, continued to intensify Thursday and could become a hurricane in the coming days.

The system continues to become better organized, the NHC said, predicting a tropical depression is likely to form during the next day or two while the system moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 miles per hour over the tropical Atlantic Ocean. Some strengthening is forecast to occur and the system could become a Tropical Storm later today or Friday.

However, it is forecast to lose its intensity over the weekend. Satellite data helped convince forecasters that the storm had met tropical cyclone criteria. Maximum sustained winds are now 30 miles per hour.

"Places like the Lesser Antilles watch out because you could feel the effect of this by the weekend". Tropical storm-force winds by Saturday morning extended up to 35 miles from the storm's center. That means it likely won't hit Florida as a tropical depression.

Colorado State University forecasters Philip Klotzbach and Michael Bell now say they expect 11 named tropical storms in the 2018 season. The area denoted in yellow east of the Caribbean Sea shows a concentrated area of t-storms associated with a small low pressure center. Hurricane Beryl is expected to produce 2 to 4 inches of rain through Sunday across the southern Leeward Islands and northern Windward Islands.

What's the difference between a tropical wave, a tropical depression and a tropical storm?

The barrelling tropical storm caused more than £37million ($50million) in damage and claimed 12 lives as it moved up the United States coast in May.

Following Tropical Storm Alberto, which developed during Memorial Day weekend, there were no tropical storms over the Atlantic basin during June for the first time since 2014, AccuWeather reported. Eventual dissipation is forecast by early next week, but the remnants of the system may continue to move west-northwest through the Caribbean as a source of moisture.
