Beryl dissipates after Dominica, easing threat to others

This graphic from the National Hurricane Center shows the projected path of Tropical Storm Beryl on Sunday

The storm was centered about 160 miles south of Cape Hatteras with maximum sustained winds near 45 miles per hour as of 11 a.m. Sunday. On average, the third storm forms August 13, said Phil Klotzbach, a tropical weather researcher at Colorado State University and Capital Weather Gang contributor. By midweek, Chris may intensify into a hurricane as it continues to become better organized.

In the tropics, Tropical Storm Chris is expected to become category 1 hurricane at some point Monday.

Chris, the third storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, was named Sunday morning as it gained strength off the coast of the Carolinas.

Weather conditions are expected to gradually improve on Tuesday.

Chris is churning up the seas along the coast, and large waves and deadly rip currents will be possible from North Carolina into the Mid-Atlantic states, the hurricane center said.

"Based on the current track by the National Hurricane Center, it looks to be tracking well southeast of Nantucket", Buttrick said.

A tropical storm warning is up on Guadeloupe and Dominica, while a tropical storm watch has been issued for the French Caribbean territories of Martinique, St. Martin and St. Barts as well as St. Maarten, Barbados, St. Lucia, Saba and St. Eustatius.

Now, it's moving west-northwest at 23 mph with 45 mph sustained winds that extend 45 miles from the storm's center, still described as "disorganized".

"However, due to the continuing uncertainties associated with Beryl, any possible motion towards the north could bring the system closer to the islands, thus, watches or warnings cannot be ruled out", the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) said in its 11am update on Sunday.

Tropical Storm Beryl is moving rapidly westward toward the Lesser Antilles at the eastern entrance of the Caribbean Sea.

Intermittent rainstorms already were hitting Dominica early Sunday, and the U.S. National Hurricane Center said 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 centimeters) of rain could fall as the storm moves through or near the island on Sunday night.

The DDM said a high wind advisory is in effect.
