Amid protests, Ottawa issues travel warning for Haiti

Haiti suspends fuel price hike after protesters riot

Telecommunications services, including Internet and phone lines, have been affected throughout Haiti.

This situation strikes me personally because my church's youth ministry just had a mission trip to Haiti, and by God's grace they returned in time to escape this frightful situation.

Nearly 40,000 people remain in makeshift camps after an natural disaster killed more than 200,000 people eight years ago, and thousands of others have died from a years-long cholera epidemic.

Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant announced the temporary suspension of an increase in prices of up to 50 percent for gasoline, diesel and kerosene on Saturday afternoon - just a day after they were announced. The government quickly abandoned this plan as chaos erupted over the weekend.

A police officer walks through the parking lot of the Delimart supermarket complex, where vehicles sit charred and looted merchandise lies scattered after two days of protests against a planned hike in fuel prices in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Sunday, July 8, 2018. It is unknown whether these last four died in protests.

Flights have resumed, allowing people who had been stuck in Haiti over the weekend, including groups of US missionaries, to leave the country.

There have been no reports that US citizens were injured in the violence, CNN reported.

"Do not travel to the airport unless you confirmed your flight is departing", the department said in a statement.

"We urge USA citizens in Haiti who are safe to contact their loved ones directly and/or update their social media status", the embassy stated.

"If you encounter roadblocks, turn around and go to a safe area", the embassy urged. A youth group from Bradenton, Fla., was stopped at a roadblock on their way to the Port-au-Prince airport.

"Flights are cancelled today and the airport has limited food and water available", the U.S. State Department said.

A local colleague of McFarlin's was riding on a motorcycle a few miles ahead of the missionary group's bus.

"If there is no response within two hours, the government will be considered as having resigned" and the legislature will take charge, said Gary Bodeau, the president of the Chamber of Deputies. "Just people taking advantage of the situation".

Jody Flowers - the lead minister from Chapin United Methodist Church, in SC - told CNN Sunday that 13 members of his church were supposed to leave Haiti on Saturday but their departure date was now uncertain.
