2 shot at Kansas elementary school; gunman at large

KMBC-TV reports that Overland Park police spokesman Officer John Lacy said the shooting happened on Tuesday (Wednesday NZ Time) at Sunrise Point Elementary School in the Blue Valley school district.

By noon, an armored vehicle began to move toward the house, said Overland Park Police Chief Frank Donchez.

District spokeswoman Becky Miller said no students were on campus. Sources inside the department verified that two adults are in critical condition, but no students were injured.

Police began responding to the scenes around 9:20 a.m. The suspect stole another vehicle at gunpoint a few minutes later.

But later Tuesday afternoon, as the suspect was being taken to the county jail, he tried to escape from a police vehicle in the area of 127th Street and Antioch Road.

The suspect fled and attempted a carjacking at a nearby auto wash, police say.

Investigators said the suspect shot two co-workers earlier in the day as they installed artificial turf on a playground at the school.

Police say they are searching for a black GMC Denali.

Further shots were fired there, but no one was injured.

Rhodes says authorities are trying to make contact with the suspect.
