Woman hurts 2 in south France with box cutter, is detained

Woman shouting 'Allahu akbar' attacks 2 with box cutter at supermarket in France

A store customer in the maritime town of La Seyne-sur-Mer was slashed in the chest and hospitalized.

Two people were injured in a town in southern France on Sunday when a woman shouting "Allahu akbar" (God is greatest) attacked two people in a supermarket with a boxcutter, prosecutors said. A woman working the cash register was hurt less seriously, French radio station Europe 1 quoted the prosecutor in nearby Toulon as saying.

She is now in police custody. The victims were taken to hospital, with their injuries described as non-life-threatening.

The woman was dressed in black and wearing a veil at the time, shouting "Allahu akbar" - "God is great" in Arabic - before she was placed under control by people intervening, according to Var-matin.

Officials said the attacker, who is said to be 24 years old and born in France, has been detained.

France has been on high alert following a string of jihadist attacks since early 2015, often by people who have become radicalised or claim to have acted in the name of the Islamic State group.

The woman "was in a panic, she was afraid, she did not understand what was happening to her, she had no strength left", Sebastien said.

Witnesses said she shouted "Allahu Akbar" as she launched her attack, which they say appeared to start as a dispute between the woman and other customers.

Police are still trying to work out if the woman, who has a history of psychiatric problems, had planned the attack or acted on the spur of the moment. The law enforcers have been searching her home, checking whether she had links to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) or other radical groups. He had also killed the passenger of a auto he hijacked in nearby Carcassonne.
