Volvo S60 to debut Polestar Engineered package

Polestar Engineered parts for Volvo 60-series models

Volvo has confirmed that the top S60 model will use a reworked version of the T8 Twin Engine's hybrid powertain, which comprises a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor.

The announcement comes shortly before the Swedish automaker is expected to unveil its new S60 sedan, which will be built in Charleston, South Carolina.

These upgrades will be shown in full when the production S60 saloon is revealed in the United States next week.

You'll be able to spot a Polestar Engineered vehicle, thanks to its gold-painted brake calipers set behind unique, lightweight wheels.

I'm not sure about Volvo's plans to go fully electric, but anytime you can get nearly 500 pound-feet from just two litres, sign me up.

"Electric cars are our future", said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. "This strategy is firmly grounded in our shared belief in an electric future for the vehicle industry". Expect the high-performance Polestar Engineered model to combine the best attributes of the V60 wagon with the powerful persona of the Polestar 1 and the elegant looks of a sedan.

The S60 T8 Twin Engine Polestar Engineered, as it is called, will sit above the regular T8 Twin Engine variant of the new S60, which is due for reveal next week but was leaked online last month.

Extra changes are largely cosmetic, the Polestar Engineered vehicle identified by a few gold highlights (that now the Polestar hallmark colour) inside and out, plus black chrome exhaust pipes.

Volvo promises to add lighter wheels that give on-lookers a view of the gold-painted Brembo brake calipers.

Recall, Polestar is now a standalone brand so will no longer be building dedicated performance offerings for Volvo like the current S60 and V60 Polestar models.

The Brembo mono-block brake callipers are cast in one piece and optimised for rigidity. Instead there will be upgrades offered under the Polestar Engineered label. Also featured are adjustable Öhlins shock absorbers, paired with a new front strut brace, both shared with the Polestar 1.

The Polestar package has a revised engine control unit, which bumps the output of the US-spec plug-in hybrid drivetrain to 309kW of power and 670Nm of torque. The software upgrades improve fuel consumption and emissions-neutral performance, and refines the automatic gear selection.
