US, Mexico and Canada to host 2026 World Cup finals

The United bid by Canada Mexico and the United States was awarded the 2026 FIFA World Cup

For all that Seattle has done to grow the game in the USA, this soccer-crazed city deserves to host in the World Cup.

"We'll get the team performing and we'll qualify if we have to", John Herdman told CTV's Your Morning Wednesday, just about an hour after the announcement that the joint bid of Canada, Mexico and the United States had beaten Morocco to host the 48-team tournament.

Nonetheless, Atlanta, Miami and Orlando all remain in the hunt, and Federation Internationale de Football Association is expected to select at least one of those three to host World Cup games.

The city was one of 23 included in the joint North American bid as a potential venue for the tournament, but only 16 cities will be selected as official hosts.

A total of 80 games will be played with 60 planned in the United States and 10 each in Canada and Mexico with the final played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, home to National Football League teams New York Giants and New York Jets.

Europe and Asia came through with the North American bid taking 11 African votes away from Morocco.

FIFA's hosting selection process was revamped in the wake of recent scandals enveloping the world governing body of soccer.

"It's always a bit of a stronger bid with more countries, but at same time if we are talking about England, with their infrastructure, they can host on their own or with the rest of the U.K". Hasseltine said. "We want to make sure the legacy lives forever and lives long beyond the games' being here". Football is known as soccer in the United States.

Canada and Mexico have already named its three host cities.

Herdman, whose team is now tied with Lebanon at No. 79 in the world rankings, has yet to hear whether the three co-hosts will secure automatic qualification as is the norm.

While Canada has never hosted-or even qualified for-the men's World Cup, it can count on its more experienced co-hosts and current NAFTA partners. Each team will play just two group-stage matches instead of the customary three. Kansas City and Cincinnati are the only candidate cities in the Midwest.

First built for the 1976 Olympic Games, the "Big O" has played host to many sporting events and teams over the years, including the defunct Montreal Expos. This effort was an enormous priority for former U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati and his successor Carlos Cordeiro and the victorious effort could be an enormous boost to the sport in the United States.

President Trump tweeted his congratulations to those involved in winning the right to host the competition.
