Trump, Kim agree to repatriating U.S. military remains

US troops in South Korea

The most tangible outcome of Tuesday's summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to be a commitment to recover the remains of USA military personnel missing in action and presumed dead from the Korean War.

China has signed up for increasingly tough United Nations sanctions against its isolated neighbor following Pyongyang's repeated nuclear and missile tests, but has always said sanctions should be accompanied by talks for a political resolution.

The Korean Central News Agency and the Korean Central Television reported Monday that Kim departed from Pyongyang on Sunday morning via a Chinese chartered airplane to hold a summit with his USA counterpart in Singapore.

"China has consistently held that sanctions are not the goal in themselves".

Although China remains North Korea's closest ally, its government has come under increasing pressure during the past year to take a tougher approach to its communist neighbor in an attempt to rid it of its nuclear weapons.

A June 11, 2018, photo in the Rodong Sinmun shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-un waving to well-wishers at a Pyongyang airport before boarding an Air China plane featuring the Chinese national flag.

Reaffirming the 27 April Panmunjon Declaration, North Korea will commit to working towards complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

"As an important party involved in the matters of the Korean Peninsula, and as a signatory of the ceasefire, China has a responsibility and obligation to play its deserved role in the progress of shifting to a non-nuclear peninsula".

In a statement signed by both leaders, the countries agreed to the recovery of the remains and the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

There is also an analysis that Pyongyang has intentionally revealed the charter of a Chinese airplane to display a close bilateral relationship in the face of worldwide sanctions led by the U.S.

North Korea and the United States remain technically at war because the fighting ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

"Of course, we are willing to see all relevant sides making positive efforts on this".

The US and North Korea to establish new relations in accordance with the desire of peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity. "And this role will continue".
