Trump aide apologises for 'inappropriate' comments on Trudeau

Was Trudeau wearing fake eyebrows at the G7 summit

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro apologised for suggesting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau deserved a "special place in hell" for a perceived breach in protocol against US President Donald Trump. He later called Trudeau "very dishonest & weak" and refused to sign a joint statement following negotiations.

And Marc Short, the White House director of legislative affairs, said that Navarro's comments were not the words that he would have chosen to characterize the leader of Canada.

Navarro said Sunday that his sentiment came "right from Air Force One". "I really did. Other than he had a news conference that he had cause he assumed I was in an airplane and I wasn't watching. But actually we were just talking, the whole group, about something unrelated to everything, very friendly".

People close to the prime minister reject the suggestion he misread Trump and cite what they say is the president's highly unpredictable nature.

"If you make a mistake, you should it admit it, learn from it, don't repeat it", Navarro said.

The President said he had told fellow G7 nations that the U.S. requires fair market access and end to unfair trading practices.

Some of Trump's aides also lashed out at the Canadian prime minister. At that post-G7 press conference on Saturday, Trudeau had called US steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and said he would proceed with retaliatory tariffs that he'd already announced.

This month, Trump imposed tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum from Canada and other American allies, a reversal from a previous indication that those countries would have an opportunity to avoid the tariffs.

US adviser Peter Navarro said there is a "special place in hell" for foreign leaders like Trudeau, which he has since apologized for.

Goodale said Canada has put forth "constructive ideas" on how to "improve trade flows" between both countries.

For dairy products, which has been the focus of Trump's anger, those tariffs range from almost 300 per cent for excess imports of butter and cream to 270 per cent for certain dairy powders to 240 per cent for cheese, whole milk and yogurt. "They don't take our farm products - many of them".

In contrast, Trump was mostly smiles with North Korea's Kim Jong Un on Monday, and said talks between them were "top-of-the-line".

Mr Trump's presidency has been clouded by a federal investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and possible collusion by his campaign.

"On (Trump's) comments, I'm going to stay focused on defending jobs for Canadians and supporting Canadian interests", he said.

Trump's attacks arrive as the United States and Canada renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement alongside Mexico.
