Thiem, Nadal in French Open final

Rafael Nadal

Del Potro wept courtside after downing third seed Marin Cilic 7-6 (7/5), 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

More important than that, of course, is the match's ultimate outcome, and a significant moment came with Schwartzman serving while up 3-2 in the second after the initial delay. Tomorrow men's singles quarterfinals and women's singles semifinals!.

The first set always looked key and Del Potro clinched the opener as Cilic blinked first.

He left Del Potro trailing in a cloud of Parisian clay dust to set up a final against Dominic Thiem on Sunday. He won three consecutive sets to advance to the semifinals, and he did so emphatically.

Nadal said the 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory in 2 hours, 42 minutes was his best match of the tournament.

Schwartzman compiled a 20-4 edge in winners for the set, closing it with a forehand that landed right at the baseline. Nadal's record at Roland Garros now stands at 85 wins and two defeats. After the rain interruption, Nadal leveled and was leading 5-3 and serving at 30-30 when play was suspended for the day.

Rafael Nadal briefly interrupted the French Open final against Dominic Thiem in the third set with an apparent problem with his left wrist.

The world No. 8 made history of his own Friday, becoming the second Austrian male to advance to a grand slam final after the hard-nosed 1995 French Open champion, Thomas Muster.

Cecchinato had never won a Grand Slam match until this tournament.

Top seed Simona Halep, twice a runner-up, takes on two-time major victor Angelique Kerber. The Argentinian said that the story of David and Goliath inspired him in a remarkable comeback from two sets down against Kevin Anderson, who is 13 inches taller than him, in the last 16. "The match changed a lot", he said.

But Schwartzman continued to be the aggressor as Nadal played too short, or too long. I know I have to play my best tennis to have a chance on Sunday.

Thiem was on the couch, watching on TV, in 2005, when Nadal earned his first Grand Slam trophy in Paris at age 19.

He put out seeded players Pablo Carreno Busta and David Goffin before the seismic shock of knocking out 2016 champion Djokovic in the quarter-finals. Nadal's astonishing French Open record now reads: Won 85, lost two.

But it took Muguruza quite a while to get going against Halep, who managed to keep sending ball after ball back over the net.

Del Potro had required the doctor early in the first set after appearing to jar his ankle in the red clay.

Earlier, Thiem needed to survive a nasty bout of the jitters to see off Marco Cecchinato and reach his first grand slam final. Nadal's introduction included a year-by-year accounting of every time he'd already won the French Open.

Thiem then held his serve at love for a 2-0 lead.

"I think it helps, definitely, knowing that you were the last guy to beat him", said Bresnik, whose association with Thiem spans more than 15 years.

In the second set, Schwartzman won the fifth game and led 3-2 when play was first halted.

Former Roland Garros junior champion Cilic, bidding to reach the semi-finals for the first time after falling in the quarter-finals 12 months ago, kept his nose in front in the fourth.

The Austrian will face the victor of Juan Martin del Potro and Rafael Nadal.
