Rocket-powered Tesla Roadster may fly, Elon Musk says

A Tesla super charger is shown at one of the company's charging stations in San Juan Capistrano, California, U.S., May 30, 2018.

In the tweet, Musk said current issues with the software would be "fully fixed in August update", and the V9 update would "begin to enable full self-driving features".

Autopilot, a form of advanced cruise control, handles some driving tasks and warns those behind the wheel they are always responsible for the vehicle's safe operation. To date, Autopilot resources have rightly focused entirely on safety. The canister could be filled by an electric pump run off the car's battery pack when the Roadster's drive motors don't need full power, although Musk said that they "are going to go a lot further", than that with the design.

The Tesla founder made the disclosure in a Twitter conversation, responding to a user who complained about issues with Autopilot, which is now considered semi-autonomous with the requirement that a motorist be at the wheel at all times.

Tesla encourages drivers to pay attention while Autopilot is engaged, and its cars include features that nudge drivers into taking over if, for instance, they're not grabbing onto the steering wheel. But the company has also heavily promoted its cars' supercharged ability to fend for itself: The Tesla website promises "Full Self-Driving Hardware on All Cars", which it says offer "a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver".

In another fatal accident previous year, Tesla's Autopilot failed to detect a truck crossing the road, but investigators pointed out the driver was watching a movie at the time and not paying attention with the semi-autonomous system in operation.

Based on Musk's tweet, adding new features to Tesla's Autopilot functionality will be the centerpiece of the update in August. Tesla's stock price jumped Monday by more than 4.5 percent.

GM had said it will expand the roll-out of Super Cruise to all its Cadillac models beginning 2020.
