Real Madrid appoints new boss

Lopetegui, who has coached the Spanish national team for the past two seasons, will coach Real for the next three seasons, the statement added.

Real, who are now without a manager following Zinedine Zidane's shock departure earlier this month, are ready for a summer shake-up.

That's according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague who admits he was surprised by the news.

Lopetegui is now in charge of the Spain national squad who are preparing for the World Cup in Russian Federation.

Spain coach Julen Lopetegui will take over as Real Madrid boss after the World Cup, the La Liga giants have announced.

He succeeds the Zinedine Zidane who retired after winning an unprecedented three successive Champions League for the club.

La Roja kick off their campaign against Portugal on Friday and this news will now dominate all the pre-match and pre-tournament talk in the Spain camp.

The Spain coach had a long chat with Barcelona defender Gerard Pique on Tuesday morning as the players became aware his decision to step down after the World Cup.

In addition, he remains something of an unknown quantity as a coach.

Lopetegui, 51, has been in charge of the Spanish national team since July 2016, when he took the reins following the European Championship in France.

As for Ronaldo's future with Real Madrid, it's possible he never plays for Lopetegui at all.

Prior to taking on the Spain job, he managed Portuguese side Porto for 18 months.
