According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Raptors are hiring assistant coach Nick Nurse to replace Dwane Casey, who was sacked just over a month ago.
Wojnarowski adds, however, that the two sides are still working through contractual details.
Earlier this week there were reports that Ujiri & Co. had narrowed their list down to two candidates: San Antonio Spurs assistant Ettore Messina, and Nurse. Nurse has six seasons of head-coaching experience in the National Basketball Association G League, where he won two championships and a coach of the year award.
Casey, meanwhile, has already found his next job: with the Detroit Pistons. Nurse would probably have to be considered the front-runner of the group, given his track record and how the offense shifted and held up in the playoffs, but it's always hard to ascribe credit and blame across a coaching staff. He was also named D-League Coach of the Year in 2011.
The Toronto Raptors had the best regular season in franchise history this year, but after LeBron dealt them yet another postseason beatdown, the franchise elected to fire coach Dwane Casey.
The Toronto Raptors were the last team to open up a coaching vacancy and, on Tuesday, became the last team to fill that vacancy. During his seven-year tenure, Casey went 320-238 (.573).
Thoughts on Nurse as the next head coach?
"I leave here with my head high", he told TSN via text message in May.
