Raccoon scales high-rise in downtown St. Paul

Minnesota Raccoon

Building maintenance was able to get the raccoon to step back from that ledge but instead of safely heading down to the ground, it instead escaped up, scaling some 20 stories on the nearby UBS tower.

Several downtown Twitter users snapped photos Monday of the raccoon stranded on a second-story ledge by the Seventh Street Skyway near Cedar Street.

A raccoon scaling a Minnesota skyscraper may be the most popular thing on the internet right now and it's putting many people in a Marvel state of mind - complete with Rocket Raccoon jokes.

MPR reporter Tim Nelson tweeted a video of the raccoon "doing a little grooming" from the 23rd floor's ledge, "now that he's a social media star".

On Tuesday afternoon, the raccoon could be seen holding steady on a window a few floors from the top of the building. We all just have to keep our fingers crossed.

There is not a whole lot that St. Paul Animal Control can do because a rescue mission would be too unsafe for both the raccoon and the workers.

A spokeswoman for the city's Department of Safety and Inspections, which oversees animal control, told the Twin Cities Pioneer Press that they planned to set a trap with food at the top of the building.

The raccoon has gotten Twitter so excited that someone has even started an account on the critter's behalf: "The St. Paul Raccoon".
