Pompeo calls questions about gaps in Trump-Kim statement 'insulting and ridiculous'

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un shake hands ahead of their meeting at Capella Hotel in Singapore on June 12

Trump, who returned to Washington early on Wednesday, hailed the meeting with Kim, the first between a sitting United States president and a North Korean leader, as a success that had removed the North Korean nuclear threat.

Republican lawmakers such as Senators Bob Corker, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, and Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, called for "open eyes" and "concrete accomplishments" after Trump left the island nation with a vague commitment to denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, which in the past has been language used by Pyongyang as a diplomatic euphemism for a withdrawal of United States forces from South Korea and, more generally, of the USA nuclear umbrella protecting Seoul and Tokyo.

And Trump told ABC News the USA would soon end or scale back longstanding joint military exercises with South Korea, and agreed that they were "provocative" toward the North. In the run-up to the summit, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made a last-minute visit to the White House to secure Trump's support in pushing for the return of Japanese citizens abducted in North Korea.

Ordinary North Koreans consistently voice unequivocal support for the leadership when speaking to foreign media.

"You couldn't have a [more] stark difference between the last 25 years of handling this problem and the last 500 days", Gorka said.

The five South Korean women arrested for causing trouble in Orchard Road during the Trump-Kim summit have been repatriated, said the police.

"There are always concerns about President Trump and he's very erratic", Wit said. No longer - sleep well tonight!'

Whatever one thought about the summit and its result, this was Mr Trump's moment: in a day of carefully choreographed photo opportunities with Kim Jong-un he had overturned the narrative of US-North Korean relations and dragged the Hermit Kingdom on to the world stage.

He characterized them as 'very expensive, ' however, and portrayed their end as an economic decision rather than a negotiated concession that the USA had previously said it wouldn't budge on. The presidential center of the former Republican president George W Bush has been tweeting about North Korea's abuses, giving a clear indication of how he views the matter.

For his own part, Mr. Trump committed to "provide security guarantees" to North Korea.

North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat to the rest of the world, or at least that is according to U.S. President Donald Trump.

But others said it's a great step forward for peace.

"I looked at the document and I said, 'Is this for real?'" he said.

Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program will come to an end, he asserted, claiming that Kim had already left Singapore and was "on his way back" to North Korea to begin implementing their joint vows.

"Let me assure you that the "complete" encompasses verifiable in the minds of everyone concerned".

Trump also is wrong in saying "nothing happened" in return. "But I think we understand each other".

In Japan, the prospect of canceled U.S. Trump's announcement appeared to catch the Pentagon and officials in Seoul off guard, and some South Koreans were alarmed.

"The U.S. -South Korea joint exercises and U.S. forces in South Korea play significant roles for the security in East Asia", Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters Wednesday.

The U.S. has stationed combat troops in South Korea since the end of the Korean War in the 1950s and has used them in a variety of drills.
