Adding another trainer to your friend list will be as simple as swapping a trainer code with someone, sending them a friend request and waiting for them to accept or reject it.
The feature will be added this week, but it will be deeply tied to a new Friendship system which, like real friendships, is broken up into a tier system: Good, Great, Ultra and Best.
According to Koa, here is the breakdown of how long it would take to reach each level of friendship if the players worked at it every single day...
During the Photo Disc spin at any PokeStop or Gym, players may receive a special Gift.
For example, you can trade Pokemon with a "Good Friend", while a "Best Friend" grants you with extra Premiere Balls on raids. Similar to the daily quests, you'll only be able to earn ranks with your friends once per day and getting to the highest possible rank is set to take months. These Gifts will contain items and potentially an egg containing an Alolan form of a Pokemon originally discovered in the Kanto region.
Good Friends can trade all Pokemon except those of Mythical quality (which as of writing only includes Mew). As you build your Friendship Level with the friend you are trading with, you'll find that you can complete the trade with much less Stardust. This is arguably the biggest way Pokemon Go's version of trading differs from trading in the main series - where tradingPokemon in a main series game is free, trading in Pokemon Go requires you to spend Stardust.
As for trading, you'll have to be at level 10 to even think about it. Best Friends receive the largest discount on the Stardust cost of trading, the largest attack boost in battles, and four bonus Premiere Balls when Raiding together. It seems that the game wants to incentivize trading special Pokemon with only their best friends. Not only do Special Trades cost more Stardust to complete, players will need to be at a certain friendship level with their trading partner in order to complete it. By giving each other gifts, trading, or participating in gym battles / raids together, you'll be able to raise your friendship level at a rate of one uptick per friend, per day.
With all the E3 news about Pokemon Let's Go, it's worth remembering Pokemon GO still has major content updates on the way.
